Bio

Maria Julia Calvo (Mayu) was born in Córdoba, Argentina, and moved with her family to Venezuela before the age of three. Captivated by the country’s natural beauty, her parents settled in Caracas, where she grew up as the youngest of four siblings.

Maria was raised in a city of contrasts—where the majestic Ávila Mountain meets the dynamic skyline of a cosmopolitan capital. Living just an hour from the Caribbean coast and surrounded year-round by tropical warmth, she developed a deep connection to nature. The sun, the sand, the vibrant macaws, and the lush greenery of her surroundings became lasting sources of inspiration.

She later graduated as a Graphic Designer, got married, had a daughter, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee. It was there that memories of the Caribbean—its crystal-clear waters, exotic flora, and vivid colors—began to shape her artistic voice. Through her work, Maria captures what she describes as “a fragment of heaven on earth.” Her paintings reflect the vibrant spirit of the Latin American Caribbean within the Mid-South of the United States, exploring the expressive relationship between color, joy, and life.

Maria has held several solo exhibitions in Memphis, including shows at the Goodwin Gallery and the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Notable exhibitions include Caribe (October 2013), Tropicalia (August 2015), and a showcase at Memphis City Hall (September–October 2015). She has also participated in collective exhibitions such as Hispanic Heritage Month at Art Village Gallery (2013) and the Latino Memphis Festival (2015).

In 2015 and 2016, she was selected to participate in Paint Memphis, contributing alongside more than 70 artists to one of the largest collaborative mural projects in the city.

In 2019, Maria was commissioned to create large-scale public artworks, including a mural for the library at Saint Francis of Assisi School in Cordova, Tennessee. That same year, she also designed and painted a softball field featuring the athletic team logo for Saint Benedict at Auburndale High School Eagles.
